Shapewear. Ugh, right?
For most, the idea of wearing shapewear is nothing to jump for joy over. Maybe we’re still recovering from the assault of the corset, the centuries-old garment aimed at tightening a women’s body into the most unnatural of shapes.
But due to fabric and design technology, modern shapewear is a whole new ballgame. With built-in paneling and stretchy spandex, shapewear hugs your body like a second skin instead of harshly cutting into it. There are so many style options, so you’re in control (no pun intended!) Read up on some of the basics below. You may not wear it every day, but we promise that shapewear can boost your confidence and make you feel like a proper modern lady.
Glamorous in a Girdle
Why should you consider a girdle? We’ll tell you!
A girdle is simply a type of shapewear that streamlines your lower body. The term often evokes an old-fashioned sensibility because girdles are, indeed, old-fashioned. Open-bottom girdles and panty girdles were most popular in the early to mid-190o’s. Both were worn to help ladies hold up their stockings. Open-bottom girdles provide plenty of firm control, while panty girdles are less restrictive and more wearable—akin to tight athletic shorts.
Despite a decline in popularity, girdles of today are really just another form of shapewear meant to smooth and firm in trouble areas. They are available in a variety of styles and fabrics, some more modern and others more true to the original style. Girdles look great under pencil skirts and body-skimming dresses, and many women swear by them still as a superior way to smooth, shape, and feel ultra-feminine
The iconic modern-day lover of the brief shaper is Bridget Jones. Like so many ladies out there, Bridget minimized her tummy pooch with a brief shaper. They might not be as “cute” as cuts with less coverage (though Hugh Grant didn’t seem to mind) but brief shapers get the job done! They can be worn under anything, from jeans to evening wear. With built-in paneling, your tummy and bum get a nice boost of confidence. They’re available in varying levels of control and plenty of color options. (Some with light padding in the back, if you’d like a little extra!)
All-in-One Body Suit Control
If you’re looking for all-over control, the All-in-One Body Suit is the way to go. This style shapes your entire torso, from back and sides to tummy. (Some styles also include hip and thigh shaping.) These are most handy under dresses. We’re all concerned with looking our best on special occasions, and body suits add that extra element of confidence. All-in-one shapers come in all styles and strap configurations so you can wear virtually any dress—some include the option to wear your own bra, as well.
